Leonardo da Vinci, a true Renaissance man, is widely regarded as one of the greatest painters of all time. Born on April 15, 1452, in Vinci, Italy, he was a polymath who made lasting impacts in various fields including art, science, engineering and mathematics.

Da Vinci's artistic career began with an apprenticeship to artist Andrea del Verrocchio in Florence. It was during this period that he met other prominent artists such as Sandro Botticelli and Domenico Ghirlandaio. Da Vinci's earliest known works include "Annunciation" and "The Baptism of Christ," both painted while he was still an apprentice.

One of his most famous paintings is the enigmatic "Mona Lisa," which has been the subject of much speculation over the years. Painted between 1503-1506 for French king Francis I at his palace Fontainebleau, it features a subtle smile and intricate details that continue to captivate audiences today.

Another masterpiece by da Vinci is "The Last Supper." Painted on a wall in the refectory of the Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan between 1495-1498 for Duke Ludovico Sforza (also known as Ludovico il Moro), it depicts Jesus Christ sharing his last meal with twelve apostles before he betrayed them.

Da Vinci also designed several inventions that were well ahead of their time. He conceptualized flying machines like ornithopters or flapping-wing gliders; armored vehicles propelled by cannons; submarines; parachutes; self-propelled carts called carriages on rails or roads; escalators; helicopters powered by rotors like modern helicopter blades; portable bridges used to cross rivers or chasms without damaging them after use.

In addition to his artistic achievements and inventions, da Vinci made significant contributions to human anatomy through detailed drawings from cadavers obtained from local hospitals or executed criminals at autopsy tables. His work included accurate depictions of organs inside human bodies along with descriptions related to blood vessels.

Useful though these drawings were for anatomical understanding they could not have been published due to religious restrictions against dissection at that time so they remained private sketches until long after his death when some were published posthumously
