一、Introduction to the Bard of Avon
William Shakespeare, often referred to as the Bard of Avon, is widely regarded as one of the greatest writers in the English language and the world's pre-eminent dramatist. He was born on April 23, 1564, in Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire, England.
二、Early Life and Career
Shakespeare's father was a glove maker and a prominent figure in his community. His mother came from a farming family. Shakespeare received little formal education but demonstrated an early talent for writing and acting.
三、The Elizabethan Theatre Scene
During Shakespeare's time, theatre was a popular form of entertainment in London. The first permanent playhouse opened in 1576 with Christopher Marlowe's "Tamburlaine." In 1599, Shakespeare became an actor and playwright for Lord Chamberlain's Men (later known as King Charles' Men).
四、Major Works
Shakespeare wrote at least 38 plays and over 150 sonnets. Some of his most famous works include "Romeo and Juliet," "Hamlet," "Macbeth," "Othello," "King Lear," "A Midsummer Night's Dream" (a comedy), and "Julius Caesar."
